March Book Haul

March Book Haul

Here is my latest book haul! A little late I know but here it is anyway. I realised as I wrote up this blog post that both books have a lot of historical influences and I absolutely adore that. So, if you like history, action, war, politics, intrigue and magic, then these books are for you!!

Enjoy!

"China: 1200 A.D.

The Song Empire has been invaded by its warlike Jurchen neighbours from the north. Half its territory and its historic capital lie in enemy hands; the peasants toil under the burden of the annual tribute demanded by the victors. Meanwhile, on the Mongolian steppe, a disparate nation of great warriors is about to be united by a warlord whose name will endure for eternity: Genghis Khan.

Guo Jing, son of a murdered Song patriot, grew up with Genghis Khan's army. He is humble, loyal, perhaps not altogether wise, and is fated from birth to one day confront an opponent who is the opposite of him in every way: privileged, cunning and flawlessly trained in the martial arts.

Guided by his faithful shifus, The Seven Heroes of the South, Guo Jing must return to China - to the Garden of the Drunken Immortals in Jiaxing - to fulfil his destiny. But in a divided land riven by war and betrayal, his courage and his loyalties will be tested at every turn."

  • One of my favourite genres when it comes to watching Chinese dramas or reading literature is Wuxia. Wuxia means 'martial arts heroes' and is generally epic and so much fun. So, when I found this I was done for. It's described as a "Chinese Lord of the Rings"... um hell yes?? I also love the little touches of history intertwined in the plot such as the threat of the Mongol empire (my history geek self exploded). I flicked through the book and although there is a long long list of characters, I am incredibly excited to get started on this book. Generals, war, action and politics?? You have my heart, Legends of Condor ♡♡♡

City of Brass- S.A Chakraborty

"Among the bustling markets of eighteenth century Cairo, the city's outcasts eke out a living swindling rich Ottoman nobles and foreign invaders alike.

But alongside this new world the old stories linger. Tales of djinn and spirits. Of cities hidden among the swirling sands of the desert, full of enchantment, desire and riches. Where magic pours down every street, hanging in the air like dust.

Many wish their lives could be filled with such wonder, but not Nahri. She knows the trades she uses to get by are just tricks and sleights of hand: there's nothing magical about them. She only wishes to one day leave Cairo, but as the saying goes..."

  • When reading the blurb, the words 'Cairo', 'Ottoman', 'djinn' and 'magic' pretty much had me buying the book immediately. As a fan of An Ember in the Ashes, the wait for the next book is so veryyy long and voila! I have a new series to start on and once again start the vicious cycle of waiting and torture. Yay! Anyway, I absolutely adore history and stories that involve trade along the Silk Road and this book will provide me exactly that. But I am also a huge sucker for high fantasy and this book just keeps giving and giving. I cannot wait to delve into what is sure to be a vivid and magical world.

And that is my latest book haul wrapped up! Did you buy any books recently? If so, what were they and have you gotten started on reading?
